Butter Onion Uttapam (with tomato) is one of my favorite south indian recipes. It is colorful too! Plus this is really heavy for lunch or dinner and healthier than other spicy dishes. Preparing this dish alone is easy but when you combine it with sambar and chutney, it might take some time.

Ingredients for Onion Butter Uttapam

  • 1/2 cup Urad dal
  • 1.5 cup Rice
  • 1 big size onion
  • 1 small size tomato
  • 4-5 green chili
  • 1/2 capsicum
  • 2 inch ginger
  • Few coriander leaves
  • Butter
  • Salt

Cooking time: 15 mins
Preparation time: 10 mins
Serves: 2

How to prepare Onion Butter Uttapam with tomato:

1 Soak 1/2 cup Urad dal and 1.5 cup Rice for 4-5 hour, then blend it in a mixer grinder with little water, batter should not be too thick .

2. Take 1 big size onion, 1 small size tomato, 4-5 green chili, 1/2 capcicum, 2 inch ginger, few coriander leaves and chop all of them in small pieces and put all ingredients into the batter (Step 1) with salt to taste and mix them well.

3. Heat the shallow non-stick frying pan (tawa) and wipe it with little butter and put 1/2 cup batter (step 2) into the pan, spread it with hand after few mins uttapam will become little brown. Turn it on other side with little butter over it and cook till it becomes golden brown on both sides.

Onion Butter Uttapam with tomato is now ready to serve with Coconut Chutney and Sambar for lunch or dinner.
