Dahi Bada or Dahi Vada is a heavy snacks that is considered as slightly special and is prepared on certain occasions  like holi. This item is spicy and “chatpata” and ideal for evening snacks. If taken in large quantities it can serve as dinner as well. Preparing this does take some  effort though (certain pre-preparation is required).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup urad dal
  • hing(Asafoetida)
  • 4-5 tablespoon of yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon chat masala
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder
  • Red chili powder
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil


Preparation time
: 10 mins

Cooking time: 15 mins

Serves: 2

Steps

1. Soak overnight 1 cup urad dal.

2. In a mixer grinder blend the urad dal with little salt, hing(Asafoetida) and little water. Batter must be not so thick and keep aside.

3. In a frying pan heat 1 cup vegetable oil and add the Batter with a tablespoon and fry till it become golden brown, 10 to 12 bada will prepare and keep aside.

4. In a bowl put water and drop the bada into it, remove them immediately and with hand press the bada very softly so that excess oil will come out.

5. In another bowl put 4-5 tablespoon of yogurt and beat it properly, then add 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder, salt to taste, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon chat masala , 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder and mix well.

6. Put 4 bada and dip it into the mixture (Step 5).

Note: All the measurement of mixture (step 5) is for four bada.

Garnish with red chili powder and little black salt powder.

Dahi bada is ready to serve as a evening snacks. Few drops of Imli (tamarind) water with little sugar can also be spread over the top.

  1. I love dahi baras and you may think I’m a glutton, but I can easily take ten or twelve of them at a single sitting. Thats how crazy I am about dahi bara.
