The movie Paathshaala started “semi”-promising. On one hand I was pretty sure this will not be a boring movie but at the same time I had a feeling that this movie will be “stereotypical” school teacher romance movie with the usual sentimental scenes from students. But no. I was completely wrong with the assumption.
This movie goes beyond the normal storyline and tries a different approach. The theme is noble and really is food for thought. It tries to alert our society regarding the “commercialization” of schools and it’s impact on our next generation. But as I said, it only tried. Unfortunately the impact was too thin and lost with the weak delivery of the message. There were 5-6 sequences in the movie showing the clash between the real world of advertisements and the ideal world of education and values. These scenes were far from natural and just exaggerated the situations hoping to leave a mark on the viewers. As expected – it was counterproductive.
The acting in this movie was simply top rated. Nana Patekar, Shahid Kapur, Ayesha Takia and other teachers performed very well. The songs (not many) were melodious and enjoyable too. The message of the movie was well selected but badly executed. Few unnecessary sub-plots combined with unrealistic projection of extreme (and rude) behavior from trustee and “management” shown in this movie dragged down the credibility to below par. The idea of revolution was really just in dialogs without much action on it. “Every society needs a hero” also didn’t live up to it’s strength.
This movie will neither attract “easy-going-fun” audiences nor serious artistic pleasure deriving audiences. You will be either bored or disappointed.
