The movie Aisha (Anil Kapoor Production, directed by Rajshree Ojha) started off really jolly and with a carefree mood. I liked the way the movie began with slowly building the characters through events and dialogues. Aisha is based on Jane Austen’s popular novel Emma. Unfortunately what started out to be an entertaining and delightful movie soon turned into stretches of boring sequences. And when a movie bores you, all the glitches, horrible acting and direction get exposed. Aisha is not an exception.
Sonam Kapoor plays Aisha’s role (I shouldn’t say “perfectly”) and gives a OK performance. Although she succeeds to portray a “sweet” and “stylish” look but overacted to certain extent and in some of the scenes was not looking natural at all. Aisha loves to play the role of a match-maker and sets up her single friends. But ultimately what she does is nothing but a tangled mess between her friends who soon realizes that they are just “projects” for Aisha. While the comic confusions are mildly laughable, the story becomes boring when she continues her misguided attempts at matchmaking missing the obvious.
The other actors of the film are Cyrus Sahukar, Amrita Puri, Arunoday Singh and Ira Dubey. Their performances are not too consistent either. The actions of the characters are whimsical and sometimes without any reason or logic. The character of Arjun (played by Abhay Deol) is quite interesting. He is Aisha’s childhood friend and has a “fighting-friend” relationship with her. Arjun is worried about Aisha’s flamboyant attitude towards life and constant interference in other’s love life trying to “help” them. His chemistry with Aisha is quite confusing and sometimes deliberate. Abhay Deol managed to leave an impression even though he is not the central character.
The cinematography is quite noticeable. The later part of this movie is quite disappointing specially when the events are dragged than usual. The exaggerated emotions and drama were somewhat unrealistic. Some situations in this movie can be related our lives and that’s what makes this movie still watchable. Primarily a chick flick combined with a lame love story, this is an average movie soon to disappear in the oblivion.
